-\/- -- ------------>> introduction.

Okay, here we go with another Gameboy Scene charts release. A new year has
started, and as every year starts - this Month wasnt that loaded with tons
of games. Thanks to Lord Chaos for finishing the last Issue while I was on
vacation and Zigor too busy either.

The Point system has not changed yet. You can drop your ideas and problems
via email to me personaly or contact any of us on EFnet or on your local
boards. Well, Aswell sorry for any disadvantage to any groups - But just
keep in mind: Charts cant be fair to everyone. Cheers/

Thanks to Gilligan from DCS, Lord Chaos from Lightforce,
TCB from Quartex & Bad Karma, Teksteppa from Capital, Twoflower from Triad,
and Zigor from Eurasia for commenting on this first Month of the year 2001,
and helping out where they could. Thats all from my side...

Peace, -zANEr/gbscEne stuff/LIGHTFORCE & BAD KARMA.

zANEr is a bit busy with stuff right now, so it's my turn again to finish

                           will also take you 1 point.

           * BROKEN: Releasing a not working game/trainer/crack
                     means -1 point too.

 +0 Points:

Comments about ARPi's work during January:
------------------------------------------
Gilligan : Lameness strikes back, and actually gets 6 points for it.
            As always I could type 100kb worth of text about intro removers,
            but no panic.. I won't =)

Lord Chaos: Arpi, mostly wellknown for his famous Intro-removers, comes up
            with his first Trainer which is a great +9 but unfortunately for
            a quite old game. Get going on the newer games, man! And about
            the Intro-removers: well, I don't see much sense in those but
            aswell I do not see the sense in DCS not including an IPS that
            restores the original ROMs..

TCB       : -

Teksteppa : A late, but nice, +9 trainer, a Polish translation patch, a
            couple of intro removers and a new version of a kiddie title...
            a fairly mixed bag this month from Arpi. Best release in my eyes
            is the trainer, although some of the Polish guys out there might
            disagree ;)

Twoflower : Well, ARPI - mostly known for lame introremovers - came up with
            a positive surprise this month with the release of a +9 trainer
            for the old quality title Spiderman. In short a great trainer for
            a great game. The rest is just the expected, including those lame
            introremovers which in my eyes would add minuses. I really
            appreciate his ambition to make translations though - as I have
            translated some stuff myself I know how much work it lies behind -
            admirable.

Zigor : No points for the intro removers and just 2 points for Barbie
            because it has been out in USA format. The +9 for spiderman was
            pretty cool although the game isn't that new.

Comments about CAPITAL's work during January:
---------------------------------------------
Gilligan : 4 releases from Capital in the actual new millenium (yeah,guess
            what you new millenium celebrating fools from last year..2000 was
            the last year of the last millenium, and 2001 is the first year of
            the next millenium..sigh :) Nice to finally get the US version of
            the new megaman game of which we released the jap version quite
            some time ago (you see that's the point of jap releases.hehe)

Lord Chaos: Two good games, two good trainers - pure quality not quantity
            again by Capital! I think there's much more to come next month
            by Capital again!

TCB : It's gone a little quiet on both the trainers/releases for
            Capital this month. Nevertheless, I think a lot of people would
            vote 'Megamen Extreme' as being the best release for this period.
            Keep those trainers coming!

Teksteppa : Two very nice games and two quality trainers (but then again,
            I'm a little biased ;). Not our best month but then again,
            January was pretty slow overall.

Twoflower : January wasn't just a slow month for us in CPL, but a slow month
            for the scene in general - and it shows. Concidering the amount
            of releases available I still think the CPL-boys have made a
            surprisingly good job. The trainer for "Lupo" (with
            highscoresaver!) and the one for Batman were both well performed.
            As it seems, we also succeeded to snatch one of the two major
            titles released this month - the US version of Megaman X -
            Megaman Xtreme.

Zigor : 20 releases less than last month but this is always a slow time
            for console stuff, Megamen Extreme was an interesting title and
            it definitely deserved the 4 points.

Gilligan : As I don't even use windows I've got no clue about that tool.

Lord Chaos: Never used this but I think it's one of the major utils, so fine!

TCB       : -

Teksteppa : Just one release from these guys, but it's another release of the
            best GBX multimenu so I'm not complaining ;)

Twoflower : What is there to add? A new version of DGBMax? Great!

Zigor : Is this just something taken from the internet?

Comments about DUAL CREW & SHINING's work during January:
---------------------------------------------------------
Gilligan : Seems like we aren't dead yet :-) 2 games from us this month..
            Most of us have got real life things to do (like writing final
            exams etc..) But you'll hear from us now and then :--D

Lord Chaos: A kinda dupe game and one of the major games this month -
            DCS show they are around.

TCB : Seems only one supplier was active for DCS this month - common',
            give OS some competition on those JAP-releases. Croc 2 was nice!

Teksteppa : A couple of good releases from DCS, with quality intros as
            always :). Croc 2 is probably the better release 'cos Marvin
            Strikes Back's a retitled version of Martian's Revenge, but
            game-wise Marvin wins it ;)

Twoflower : A slow month for DCS, just as for the rest of the scene - only
            two releases to show off. The releases in themselves were good
            ones though. Croc 2 was surprisingly nice concidering its pale
            predecessor, Croc, - an ordinary title picked right out of the
            dull, cheap and common bunch of seen-too-many-times-platformers...

Zigor : Croc 2 was a cool world first and it has a great new intro on it,
            too bad some people want to remove it. I think i watched the
            DCS intro longer than the actual game!

Comments about EURASIA's work during January:
---------------------------------------------
Gilligan : This month Eurasia did it.. they released my game of the month.
            This game is absolutely awesome. Oldskool released the jap
            version long ago, but there were quite some options and texts all
            in japanese which made it harder to play the game/configure
            options and so on.

Lord Chaos: Finally the world release is out.. Eurasia were the fastest!

TCB : Just one release, but a who needs more when the releases are
            this quality? I was very glad to see the USA-releases-cake was
            equally divided between a couple of groups this month. It can
            mean two things: the other groups' suppliers were lazy and took
            the day off _or_ we have some competition going on in the
            US of A. I'll let you decide...

Teksteppa : Just one game from EUR, but it's a killer title :) Definitely
            game of the month for me.

Twoflower : Surprisingly, Eurasia did succeed to snatch the second of the
            two major titles in January - the US version of Mario Tennis.
            A high quality game beating the crap out of all the other
            tennisgames on the GBC. A good addition to the scene in the
            aftermath of the xmasrush.

Zigor : After a long wait the USA version of Mario Tennis is released
            and Eurasia bring it to you. It gets +4 cos now you can play it!
            If i say this was game of the month would I be accused of
            being biased?

Comments about HIGH SOCIETY's work during January:
--------------------------------------------------
Gilligan : One day before the High Society released Fix&Foxi someone asked
            me when it would finally be released.hehe.. there it is - and
            actually it is a nice game with colorfast gfx.(although I really
            hate the comics series which it is based on.hehe)
            A Pokemon release.. as usual i will refuse to comment on it :-)

Lord Chaos: High Society stay around with two average releases!

TCB : Nice stuff - especially for all the Pokemon-collectors. Good to
            see them active on different consoles-platforms!

Teksteppa : High Society put out a fairly okayish platformer and another
            Pokemon TCG multi-language. Not a brilliant month but it could've
            been a lot worse :)

Twoflower : High Society surprises with one of the two nice german titles,
            "Lupo", which is a platformer with some feeling from the old
            C-64/Amigatitle "Turrican", including nice music from Pink/Abyss.
            Another release of PTCG? Spare me!

Zigor : Nothing much to say about Pokemon, Fix & Foxi was quite a fun
            action game, nice work for releasing that.

Comments about HOLLOWMEN's work during January:
-----------------------------------------------
Gilligan : I've been talking to the guy who did the trainer on irc, and
            told him about the file naming scene standards etc.. so the next
            release should be named properly - anyway nice to see a +4
            trainer from you.

Lord Chaos: Another new trainer 'group' has their first appearance this
            month. Fine but please choose a newer, unduped untrained game
            next time :). This trainer is for the Pal-Dupe version of Star
            Wars and the world-first has already been trained by Capital..
            Go for the newer games! But: for a first trainer, nice work!

TCB : What is this ? A trainermaker got totally bored and did this and
            was afraid it wouldn't be 100% ? Or do we have a new talent ? I
            wouldn't know, I didn't get to the point of actually testing it...

Teksteppa : It's always nice to see more trainermakers; admittedly, I didn't
            look at it (the game's fairly average, and after training it I'd
            be perfectly happy never to see it again), but a +4's a good
            showing for a first release :) Let's see an ingame key next time
            though ;)

Twoflower : For the first time we see a release by a newcomer - HollowMen -
            and they surprise with a neat, although somewhat pointless,
            trainer to "Obi-Wan". A nice first trainer, I surely hope to see
            more of those in the future...

Zigor : The game came out in December and I don't think anyone trained
            it, the hollowmen bring a +4 trainer for it. (are they really
            hollow?)

            Gift doesn't use any language in the Game at all :). But I

Comments about HOTSTUFFERS' work during January:
------------------------------------------------
Gilligan : I remember that there was quite some discussion about this game..
            and that the name would be Gift rather than Gifty and about it
            being dupe or not.. Personally i've got no clue about that issue..

Lord Chaos: Hotstuffers strike back again with awesome quality releases!

Teksteppa : Another uber-l33t title from HTS. It's Gift but with an extra
            'Y' -- officialy 25% better!

Twoflower : Anything to comment? Nah! Just another release of Gift.

Zigor : Last month they brought us Jungle book which was a european

Comments about LIGHTFORCE's work during January:
------------------------------------------------
Gilligan : Lightforce gains a total of 5 points this month with 2 trainers
            and the Kaeptn Blaubaer game. Nothing special - would be nice to
            see some trainer with more options again, however I have to say
            that there aren't a lot of options you could make for a kiddy
            puzzle game. hehe

Lord Chaos: Bit quite month for us again. But nevertheless one nice game and
            two trainers.. better than nothing! Unfortunately I am always
            around when the Games with the possibility for few options
            come out :)

TCB : Nice to see some competition on the trainers too - I heard Croc 2
            was a real bitch to train, which means the game really needed a
            trainer ;) I didn't try the game pure and simple 'cos I didn't
            like the title - sounds kinda gay...

Teksteppa : LFC put out a very nice puzzle game, and Lordee puts out two nice
            trainers in one day; let's see an ingame key next time, eh? ;)

Twoflower : It's nice to see when people keep trying and actually succeed to
            release good stuff in the end. Even though the trainers seem
            rushed, LFC have proved themselves to be worthy competitors to
            CPL and RSE by now. The only release from LFC this month was
            "Kaeptn Blaubaer", a german title which sadly seem to be the
            rework of the promising game "Rinkapink" from Shin'en - but with
            far worse and revamped gfx and the feeling of a game forced into
            the frame of a licence. Even worse is the fact that they removed
            the very promising "trailblazer/eliminator" part of the game,
            seen on preview images. To sum it up, this is a perfect example
            of how a good game can be ruined by beeing refurnished into a
            license. All I can do is weep about the loss of a nice story,
            some quality gfx and dropped features...

Zigor : 3 points for the German puzzle game Kaeptn Blaubaer, and a fast
            trainer for it (Unlimited Oxygen helps a lot!)..

Comments about MENACE's work during January:
--------------------------------------------
Gilligan : All the Action Man lovers that already got the action figures
            from MacDonalds and are now seeking for a meaning in their lifes
            can now relax.. Menace released Action Man GBC for you :-)
            But even if some ppl will drool now playing action man menace
            really slowed down big times compared to last month in which
            they had 12 games vs the 2 of this month.. ->rza: what's up ?

Lord Chaos: Menace, as always, bring the majors. Not much this month but
            well, there haven't been much games anyway.

TCB : They always pull the same stunt month after month after ... Like
            I said, it's a good thing to have some competition!

Teksteppa : Very quiet month for Menace, considering their usual performance,
            but it's been a quiet month all round, so no worries there.
            Rhino Rumble is definitely the better of the two; a nice smooth
            platformer with some quality music. Action Man, on the other
            hand, is probably a bit too frustrating for the age group it's
            aimed at. Oh well.

Twoflower : In the last day of January my favourite title of the month was
            released - "Rhino Rumble" from the dutch developer Formula with
            great music by the C-64 legend Jeroen Tel/Maniacs of Noice.
            The game plays surprisingly nice on the real thing and got the
            nice feeling of an old C-64 platformer, although it's a tad bit
            too hard. The second title, Action Man, looked swell but played
            awful. In ways it feels a little sad that five lines of text can
            sum up all the releases of MNC for January, but as for the rest,
            this have been a horrible month for US releases compared to the
            last two months great warezflow...

Zigor : Not many releases but all world firsts. It looks like DCS, EUR
            and CPL took the USA titles away this month!

Comments about OLDSKOOL's work during January:
----------------------------------------------
Gilligan : loads of JAP releases as usual.. but nothing that catched my
            interrest really - what I am waiting for are the new zelda
            games.. faz: get them!

Lord Chaos: Oldskool rocks the stage once again, unfortunately most peeps
            don't understand a word of it. Very few playable titles among
            these, also.. but ofcourse respect for Oldskool for constantly
            bringing the stuff! Puzzle Bobble was playable, therefore a +3!

TCB : Same goes for OS - fAZ remains our lean, mean releasing-machine.
            Donkey Kong 2001 definately was a stunner and also the first
            2001-branded release was by OS!

Teksteppa : Oldskool dominated this month, putting out a flood of Japanese
            titles which are probably of no interest to most people (being
            either unplayable if you can't read Japanese or Japanese-language
            versions of previously-released titles). Having said that, they
            did release the game with the best name this month; "Me Mail Bear
            Happy Mail Town" ;) Anyway, a deserved #1 position for OS
            this month.

Twoflower : Japan never sleeps. Eventhough a slow month for the rest of the
            world, those japanese fellows keep releasing the usual load of
            games. Either it's late translations from original EUR/US titles
            like "The Grinch", "Donald Duck", "Airforce Delta" or Pokemon
            copies/bad RPG's - the releaseflow from Japan is always what you
            expect it to be. The source of all the Japstuff? Oh, that's also
            just what you expected - Oldskool.

Zigor : As usual, more hamster games, funny animals and unplayable
            adventures. A good start for 2001, i'm now waiting for Hamster
            paradise 4, maybe that will come on the GBA!

Comments about PARADOX' work during January:
--------------------------------------------
Gilligan : Not much happening with PDX this month... which isn't soley PDX's
            fault, but just due to the fact that there is a lack of good
            games right now after all the good games have been pushed out
            before xmas..

Lord Chaos: One multi-version, one major from Paradox! January vibes..

TCB : In the old Amiga-days, French titles by PDX were released as
            being paraFROGS releases. I wonder where they dug that one up
            though, did Max get involved ?

Teksteppa : Batman's a fairly decent platformer with some interesting
            subgames, while Rugrats is a French-language version of a game
            that's already been out for a while. Nothing much else to say,
            really :)

Twoflower : Slow month for Paradox as for the rest. Yet another
            languageversion and the release of another Batman licence.
            Nothing above the usual and not much to add really. Let's hope
            for some more stuff in feb?

Zigor : Quite a difference from the last few months with only 2 titles
            released. Not much to say about Rugrats, Batman was a suprising
            release and gets +4 for a world first.

Comments about RAPID FIRE's work during January:
------------------------------------------------
Gilligan : Some chinese/pirate carts stuff from RPF.. didn't bother to flash
            anything of that.

Lord Chaos: Rerelease-flood going on. Super Fighters 99 is a quite cool game
            thou and worth to be checked out!

TCB : Nice WWW-releases, anyone care for the URL ?

Teksteppa : Some pirate carts to keep the collectors happy ;)

Twoflower : This have been a ruling month for my favourite group. Rapid Fire
            (who ARE those amazing guys?) shows off with some brave and hot
            releases after their xmas-break. With the score of 10 pts
            (without picking points from so-called "trainers"!) and a well-
            deserved third place in the total releasechart, RPF once again
            proves to the scene who the only group deserving to be called
            "true elite" are.

Zigor : A strange collection of 2 pointers, most of this is unplayable
            and I didn't try them so I can't really say much more!

Comments about RESISTANCE's work during January:
------------------------------------------------
Gilligan : Except of that one trainer which hit the scene a bit too late RSE
            managed to release some nice quality trainers! good work mates..
            sums up to 7 points for 4play, artist and the rest.

Lord Chaos: Dexter's Laboratory was released in November and the Trainer
            follows in middle of January.. not too fast, heh? All trainers
            are quality but all are more or less late.

TCB : The amount of options is definately going up lately on the
            RSE-trainers - nice!

Teksteppa : "Better late than never" goes the old saying, and it's clearly
            one that RSE believe in. Only two of their trainers were for
            games that were released this month, and one of those was a
            little late anyway. Still, there's always next month :)

Twoflower : The scene can be slow if it wants to, but Resistance never slows
            down the training. With largest amount of released trainers this
            month, RSE prove themselves with good load of points eventhough
            they aren't a releasegroup. As you could expect, the trainers are
            all of top-quality and most of them are more than +3's. I miss
            the additional stuff like hiscoresavers and other polishing, but
            this month was more than satisfying anyway. The Megaman Xtreme
            trainer was exactly what you wanted for a release of this
            caliber. The only thing which upset me a little is the -01 for
            the release of the trainer for "Blaubaer". Since the trainer had
            more and better options than the LFC one, this one should count
            aswell or atleast give +/- 00.

Zigor : 3rd month of activity for Resistance and they are still kicking,
            They lost a point for Kaeptn Blaubaer late trainer but apart
            from that, it's all good stuff.

            yours truly - the scene

Lord Chaos: Better inform yourself better what's out and what's not and
            don't re-release without any sense.

TCB       : -

Teksteppa : No comment necessary...

Twoflower : Jap dupes of a crappy Jap game? Twice the evil? :-)
            They deserve a -3!

Zigor : heh not a good month for these freaks! Especially since its
            their entry into in the handheld scene. Hopefully we don't
            see anymore crap from them (we probably will!)

Comments about INDEPENDENT's work during January:
-------------------------------------------------
Gilligan : I am really not a fan of puzzle games so I didn't play it for
            long, but it is a pitty that Demiforce didn't find a publisher
            for their game Drymouth.

Lord Chaos: Respect to the coder of Drymouth for releasing this Game to the
            public and for telling us all about the story behind it!
            Be sure to check this!

TCB       : -

Teksteppa : ...and here's the stuff that didn't fit in anywhere else :)

Twoflower : The only thing worth mentioning is the surprising release of
            "Drymouth" from Demiforce. The game itself is a Picross clone of
            commercial quality with awesome music from Virt/Paragon 5 - a
            title worth to check out and enjoy if you haven't done that
            already. And while you do, take a break and concider why
            publishers refuse to publish quality stuff like this when they
            flow the GBC with crap as "The Grinch" and "Barbie" just to
            name a few...

Comments about the month JANUARY 2001:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gilligan  : Capital lost the first rank from last month and Oldskool climbed
            up that ladder with a total of 38 points leaving capital and
            menace behind - and indeed suprisingly Menace only managed to
            gather enuff points for rank four..
            The biggest change however is RPF.. last month no.9 is this
            month's number 3.. wow :-)
Lord Chaos: Not too much good games out this Month, unluckily.. the boom of
            the month seems to be to train old games and also two new groups
            started with training in January. Hope they can go for the newer
            titles soon and will add some competition to the rather sleepy
            scene! Generally, let's all hope February will bring the action
            back, both scene- and release-wise!
TCB       : A slow month, which is logical after the xmas rush. Still, some
            publishers hung onto some stunners for 2001 which only pleases
            us all. Furthermore, we're getting closer and closer to the
            magical #1000 rom on www.subport.org which calls for champagne!
            Looking forward to next month...
Teksteppa : Not a great month for anyone except Oldskool, although it's not
            really surprising; most of the big games will've been released
            in time for Christmas, with Mario Tennis & Megaman Xtreme begin
            the only big, big titles released. Here's hoping February's
            a bit busier...
Twoflower : Months like this makes you sad when you concider the
            xmasreleases, although one have to remember that much of this
            months releases have been highly awaited xmas-leftovers, like
            Megaman Xtreme and Mario Tennis. Eventhough the scene might seem
            slow, we can still look forward to see the best games ever
            released this spring - the releases have finally gotten some
            overall quality, and the publishers won't release wast amounts
            of pure crap anylonger. There are still lots of time left for
            the GBC, and loads of brilliant releases like the new Zeldas,
            Toki-Tori, Stip, Shantae, Global Kumite and Aliens - Thanatos
            Encounter just to name a few. Keep the faith 'til next month!
Zigor     : Congratulations to Oldskool for busting the competition open,
            they retake the number one position which they held back in
            November. It was a suprise to see Rapid Fire making number 3!
            There seems to be a lot of unknown groups in the final standings,
            it will be interesting to see if they are around next month.
We were a bit late again.. but I guess we got rather nice comments and many
different kinds of opinions this time! A nice issue in my opinion..
